A long long time ago, when I still worked as a low level tier one in the thankless and hellish world of isp technical support, we used to get some real asshats calling in about this, and that. People who really pissed us off, so to say. We would help them with their problem, smile, thank them for their continued business, hang up the phone and then log into the particular equipment the customer seemed to be having troubles with, you know, to make sure they were connected right, packets sending back and forth...

And then promptly choke their connection and kick them off again.

Made any enemies at AN lately? =P~

I don't think accounts are considered "lucky" and "unlucky" but I believe that drops are based on where you kill an enemy. I figure all the zones are divided into a grid of squares, all enemies have predetermined drops that they will drop depending on what part of the grid they are in.

So a monster could drop a vial of black dye in let's say A15 while in C3 he might drop 20g. So if you kill enemies in a certain way maybe that way isn't to great for the drop system. For example maybe charging in head on everytime seems to give you bad drops. Well maybe pulling them out towards you would give you better drops (switching up the sectors the enemies dye in [different drops])

idk but i doubt anet would pull a lucky unlucky account thing, that's just wrong!

Anti-farming code at work... Actually i think it is incredibly stupid. I've killed Urgoz like 15 times now and haven't gotten any of his bows or even a single gold item that would be worth trying to sell, yet people who been basically dragged by their hair thru the whole place by the core of the group (often being afk half way and doing various noob things) getting greens and everything on first run.
Ya-ya, I know... go farm another place for a while, bla bla bla... That is not the point! Why should I go somewhere else if here is where I want to be now? Why should I waste my time on crawling thru missions I've done already? Or why should I work hard to basically give stuff away to people who did not deserve it?
Why cant ANet just let me do what I want? When I'm done with it I will switch to something else, but right now this is what I'm interested in... why should I be punished for that?

Although I myself have never felt this way, possibly because I hench everything and don't get to see what drops for other people, I used to know someone who considered himself to be perenially screwed by the drop system. Tons of SF runs, no greens, practically no golds ever, not a single black dye, etc. etc -- I'm sure you know the deal.

I know, law of averages and stuff, but I'm not certain I buy that. In a system where the gears and cogs are all hidden from us such huge discrepancies should be given consideration.

Threads like these are posted all the time, and every time the same thing happens. Half of the people type up their bad luck experiences, the other half explain their theory of the drop system. Part of the problem is that people easily forget the good drops, choosing to remember the bad drops. Now, I can't assure you the drops are actually random, but let me tell you this:

I don't worry about it.

Any testing done is pretty irrelevant considering the amount of different variables that need to be controlled. To find any serious proof of a flaw in the drop system would require thousands of hours of testing with near uncontrollable variables. My advice is to just play the game.

I think my luck's finally starting to change.
Recently I was wandering around doing quests and came upon Wing. First time, with a full hench group, and he dropped his green axe for me.
Just did my first FoW run. With a full 8-man group I got 3 shards.

I've had three golds drop out of everything, ever. Only one had perfect damage. I've done 50 totem axe runs, killed at least 600 root behemoths, and have not had a single drop. I'm unlucky.
Edit: I've been playing this game since a month after it came out.

Problem is, I don't have any good drops to remember in 13 months of playing this game.

I attract blues like a magnet, and get my fair share of purples, but I get practically no golds...

Hell, I've never even seen a green... and most of my characters are from Cantha where every boss and its brother supposedly drops one!

I agree. I put my faith into mathematics. Unfortunately I realize people start out ignorant and must learn mathematics (it's not a knock, we all start out without this knowledge). I just don't trust that everyone gets that far.

Character Drop ID assigned to char A(1-8): 1
Character Drop ID assigned to char B(1-8): 4

when drops occur, a drop ID is established: 2
the closer your number is to the drop number the better your drop is.
A is drop-[1], B is drop+[2], absolutes

another drop: 5
A is drop-[4], B is drop-[1], absolutes.

the math is sound, however according to the possibilities B is 'luckier' than A consistently because B is in the middle (the drop number could be above or below), where A is at an extreme (the drop number is always in one direction, not two).

I'm not saying it's made anywhere close to this, but pointing out that mathematics is always sound, people implementing it are not always so..

oh, and I haven't figured out if the Canthan system is just a buff of the old one or a different system. I do know that some characters we deemed unlucky in Tyria have been more than lucky in Cantha, but going back finds the same results. Also, a few characters that were lucky in Tyria (fissure-suit lucky) have been really unlucky in Cantha, but can go back to Tyria and get drops like they used to. I have a feeling the mathematics are working just as they were programmed into the system, which may or may not be the way intended or expected.

Here is something for you people thinking its 100% random; If my friend and I go kill stuff and I predict that he'll get all the green drops and gold drop, and it happens, is it random or am I just the next nostradamus? Cause thats basically what happens, more often that not, its expected who will get what before we even head out, funny how something so random can be so predictable.

Here is a chink on that math armor, you're basing your faith on what isn't always happening, meaning that equation doesn't hold true. These people I know have been lucky all their way in GW, while you have pretty much been reading about stories from people here who've stuck it out on a 13 month dry spell...

Thing is, as much as people try to make sense out of things, one thing is for certain, the drop assignments are crap and biased, 1 out of the group will always get more than his share regardless of group effort.

heh, sounds like I'm not the only one with terrible loot luck: On so many occasions I've gone out to get an item I want only to waste countless hours trying to get it. I go with a couple of "always lucky" guildies and it drops for them instantly. This always happens.

Best one though, was a night my guild group was just out exploring Cantha (when it was new) and each of the 7 others in the group ended up with at lest 4 golds and two people got a few greens. I got 30 something warden horns and one blue bow with req 12. In the end before we logged off, they were comparing what they got and asked me what I found. I dropped them on the floor and laughed. They said "that's it?" - ever since then, they've been watching more closely and can honestly confirm, I've got some of the worst loot luck possible. lol /flex

I've got terrible luck as well, but in a slightly different way. I get a fair amount of gold drops, but I always end up getting perfect or near perfect mods, but on otherwise really crappy weapons, that people won't pay money for even with the mod. But invariably, if I try and salvage the mod, I either get the other mod on it, which is always a worthless one, or crafting materials. So most of the time I end up having to sell the whole thing together to whoever I can find to buy it for alot less than I could sell the mod itself for.

I just don't get where in a game where updates are made all the fricken time to make the average joe get the luxury shmoe items relatively easily while 2 people who started at the same time; 1 gets 10 purples in a row and the other makes 10 mill off 10 drops(exaggeration but it happens). Supposedly they say luck is random, so in a random chance, atleast the other guy should've gotten some stuff, seems like the farming code is always on for alot of people whether they do or not, while others are always just started the game drops mode.
LMDAO do you know what random means? Random:Of or relating to an event in which all outcomes are equally likely, as in the testing of a blood sample for the presence of a substance. It is just as likely that you will get 10 golds in a row as it is that you will get 10 purples. Best example i can think of, I had to farm ghial 25 times to get 1 staff. I then took a half hour break came back and got one on my second run. The fact that it may happen for more people then others is also a matter of them being in the right place at the right time. Also u do have to realize after 1.5 hours of farming the anti farm code kicks in and your drops WILL suck. I personally find i get good drops as much as any other person, you have dry runs and u have good runs.

The people defending the randomness of the system... couldn't it just be that some people are simply experiencing a bug? A glitch? Like in, for 90% of GW everyone is fair and balanced and the drops are based upon randomness, though there are a few where the system glitches and either allocates more drops to a person or less.

Whenever i observe my loot, i'm simply getting more than others do. How can this be random? My inventory is allways the first to fill up so i have to salvage stuff. This is not some measly one or two items more, it's about twice as much. Everytime.

What i'm assuming here is that there IS a glitch in the system, one of those hard to catch ones which is mostly based upon someones personal feeling. This bug seems to allocate more drops to one account than to another one (And thus logically more rares/greens/runes as well).

However to really test the system A-Net would have to globally analyze the loot logs and see how it behaves. If this is really a bug and not just intended.

I was in FoW the other day doin some farming with a party.

The first shard to drop was for our AFK man, who needless to say came straight out of AFK, apologising profusely. Then in another group 1 person got 5 shards in 1 farm set, where I have to be content with my 3 shards over a week.

There seems no balance in how items are issues, sure ive got a helluva stack of glitter and boney bits, but Id love to be able to go into FoW and collect 5 shards in 1 run. Some people get all the luck.

my loot is always very poor quality, ive had 1 Green and 1 Decent Gold in my 7 months of playing GW

Seems many of us need fertilizer.

As a lighter side things on this topic; anyone ever get a mod you were after (not even a great one) but just not be able to salvage it? In my many months of playing, I have yet to salvage a firey bow string. I have kept count as I find it extremely amusing. 36 fiery bow strings have been turned into wood planks for me. I've been using that superior salvage kit to attempt, yet still, nothing.
